Overview
Built to suit for Apple in 2012, the property sits at the center of Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade, one of the Los Angeles area’s most active shopping districts and pedestrian retail corridors.
Architecture
The glass envelope gives the store the clarity of a pavilion: transparent, civic, and precise against the low-slung texture of Santa Monica.
History
Purchased by a KLM affiliate in 2014, the property is subject to a long-term net lease with Apple Inc.
Cultural context
The building participates in the changing idea of retail as a public room: commercial, yes, but also urban, social, and architectural.
